Courses for exchange students at the Department of Biology

In principle, you can find all the courses offered in the course catalogue of the campus management system TUCaN. The current courses for the summer semester will be available from 1 March and the current courses for the winter semester from 1 September. Courses in the biology degree programmes are generally taught in German. A number of English-language modules are offered in the Master's degree programme. In some German-language modules it is possible to take the examination in English.

A module is always structured to include several courses. These are usually lectures, tutorials or seminars and practicals. The lectures and many tutorials are open to all students. In all practical courses and in some seminars, there are only a limited number of places and prior knowledge is often a pre-requisite to enrol. Therefore, not all students can enrol in all practicals and seminars. When you submit your learning agreement, the International Coordinator of the Department of Biology will clarify with you which of your selected modules include a practical and seminar. If you arrive from outside Europe and do not complete a learning agreement, please contact the International Coordinator early on to discuss your choice of courses.

The first four semesters consist of the so-called mandatory modules. These usually cover the entire semester. They address the fundamentals of the respective subject.

In the fifth and sixth semesters there are the so-called mandatory elective modules. In these modules, the content from the basic modules is expanded upon. They are therefore only suitable for advanced students who already have basic knowledge in the respective subject. The mandatory elective modules are offered as a block course. You can find an overview of the times of the modules here.

n the Master's programme, all modules are organised in blocks. Here you can find an overview of the modules on offer and when they are scheduled over the semester.

In addition to the modules that include theoretical and practical elements, there are also modules that consist solely of theoretical content.

Laboratory internships are a great way to gain practical experience in laboratory work. In these internships you have the chance to work in a research lab for a certain period of time (3-6 weeks). If you would like to do a laboratory internship, please write an email to the International Coordinator and indicate at least two labs that would be of interest to you. Information about the research labs can be found here:Meet our researchers .

If you are planning to do your thesis at the TU Darmstadt, please contact the head of the research lab where you would like to do your thesis well in advance of your semester abroad. Ask whether you can do your thesis in the lab and agree on a timeframe for your thesis work.

BioBuddies

To help you find your way around the Department of Biology, members of the BioBuddies programme will provide guidance and support during your semester abroad or with your studies.
